Kenya electricity tariffs

KPLC tariffs, laid out for solar and EV decisions.

Solar savings and EV charging costs in Kenya depend on your Kenya Power tariff class, time-of-use windows, demand charges and monthly levies. These are the reviewed tariff profiles StimaPulse uses in its calculations, with their sources.

Classes

Find your customer class

Domestic (DC), small commercial (SC), commercial and industrial (CI1 at 415 V, CI2 at 11 kV, CI3 at 33 kV) and e-mobility customers are billed differently. Your class is printed on your KPLC bill.

Time of use

Peak and off-peak hours

Time-of-use classes pay less at night. Shifting EV charging, pumping or battery charging into off-peak hours can cut costs without new generation.

EV charging planning
Demand

Demand charges matter for CI customers

CI customers pay for maximum demand every month. Batteries and load management can reduce peaks; solar alone may not.

Your tariff sets solar savings

Each kWh of solar replaces the rate you would otherwise pay at that hour, so the same system saves different amounts for different classes.

Reviewed KPLC tariff rates

Base energy rates per kWh by customer class, with an estimated all-in rate that adds the fuel cost charge, levies and 16% VAT at the values from the last review (2026-10-07). Surcharges change monthly; always confirm current gazetted rates with Kenya Power or EPRA before making financial commitments.

Frequently asked questions

What does electricity cost per kWh in Kenya?

It depends on your KPLC customer class and, for time-of-use customers, the time of day. Your bill also adds the fuel cost charge, statutory levies and 16% VAT on top of the base energy rate. The table on this page shows reviewed base rates and an estimated all-in rate for each class.

What is the KPLC e-mobility tariff?

It is a dedicated tariff for EV charging connections. The time-of-use version charges a lower rate at night (22:00 to 06:00) than during the day, which makes overnight depot charging cheaper.

What are KPLC demand charges?

Commercial and industrial customers (CI classes) pay a monthly charge based on their maximum demand in addition to energy charges. Reducing peaks with batteries or load scheduling can lower this part of the bill.

Why does my bill differ from the base tariff?

The base rate excludes the monthly fuel cost charge, foreign exchange and inflation adjustments, other levies and VAT, several of which change month to month. The all-in figures here are estimates using the surcharge values at the last review date.

How does StimaPulse use these tariffs?

Solar, battery and EV charging scenarios are priced against the reviewed tariff for your customer class, including time-of-use windows and demand charges, so savings and payback reflect your real bill structure.
